Take Aim At High Gas Prices With Tips, Products

CINCINNATI -- Has the $4 figure ever scared you more?

That’s where gasoline prices per gallon appear to be headed, and drivers are willing to try nearly anything to cut their costs.

Hybrids can help, and sales of the vehicles have risen sharply with gasoline prices.

Several types are available, but the Toyota Prius, which uses an electric motor for most city driving, has been on the market the longest.

“That part of the system in the car, the hybrid system, is maintenance-free,” said Terry Thompson of Kerry Toyota. “It's like a blender.”

Ethanol converter kits, which can be added to many vehicles, can be found online for $250-$500.

Lease trading companies can help drivers get out of a gas guzzler and behind the wheel of a more fuel-efficient vehicle for around $200.

“People are willing to take over these Hummers or SUVs or the little more expensive cars because they're able to project their finances, and they say, ‘You know what? It's a 10-month test drive,’” said Sergio Stiberman of leasetrader.com.

Experts said motorists can cut costs by filling up at night, when gasoline is more dense and provides more bang for the buck.

Keeping your tank only half-full can also improve gas mileage, because the a full tank adds weight to the vehicle.
