US Auto Market In Recession

Nissan's Ghosn says US auto market in recession

Associated Press - February 22, 2008 7:54 AM ET

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) - The head of Nissan says the U.S. auto market is in a recession.

But Carlos Ghosn (gohn) is optimistic that the market will improve.

Car and light truck sales totaled 16 million vehicles in 2007, the worst year in a decade. Sales are expected to slip this year as well.

Ghosn told students at Seoul's Korea University that global automakers need to focus on emerging markets. He says the U.S. and Japanese markets have been stagnant for the past four years.

Ghosn says Russia will surpass Germany in the next two years as Europe's largest auto market.
