Korea produced 4.086 million cars in 2007, up 6.4 percent from the previous year, making it the world's fifth biggest car producer, the Korea Automobile Manufacturers Association said on Monday.

The association's data is based on the total car production inside the territorial boundary of each country. For example, cars produced at Hyundai Motor's plant in Alabama are counted as produced in the U.S.

Despite sluggish domestic business, Japan retained the top ranking for a second straight year by producing 11.596 million cars in 2007, up 1 percent from the previous year, thanks to a 9.8 percent increase in exports. Japan's output accounted for 15.9 percent of the world's entire car production.

The U.S. finished second by producing 10.751 million cars, down 4.5 percent from 2006. China secured third place by producing 8.882 million cars, up 22 percent from 2006. Germany finished fourth with 6.196 million cars, and France sixth with 3.09 million.

The first through sixth ranks remained the same as in 2006, but some emerging nations stood out this year. Brazil rose by one notch to seventh place by producing 2.973 million cars in 2007. Making its debut in the top 10 list, India also rose one notch to 10th place with 2.246 million cars.

Spain dropped a rung to eighth place with 2.890 million cars, and Canada finished ninth with 2.578 million. A total of 73.072 million cars were produced around the world last year, up 5.1 percent from 2006.
